The sulfur springs of the area are said to have been visited already since 1490. In April 1945 there were prominent concentration camp prisoners - including Martin Niemöller, Léon Blum and Kurt von Schuschnigg and many families, who should have been eliminated by order of Adolf Hitler, but at the request of Wehrmacht captain Wichard von Alvensleben were released from SS custody. On May 4, 1945, the US Army reached the place and brought the liberated prisoners to Capri.
The municipality is located to a significant extent in the natural park Fanes-Sennes-Prague. In the west and southwest high mountains mark the boundaries to Olang and Enneberg. In the south it is crossed by the Stollabach, the most important tributary of the Pragser Bach. To the east a mountain ridge separates Praies from the Höhlensteintal.
