plan of Grammichele Three months after the earthquake of 11 January 1693 which destroyed Occhiolà (the ancient Echetla or Eketla) as well as many other centers in the Val di Noto, Prince Carlo Maria Carafa Branciforte founded on his fiefdom about 2 km from the hill of Occhiolà the settlement of Granmichele or Grammichele.

The prince himself, assisted by friar Michele from Ferla, designed the hexagonal plan of the new town, a choice that was also adopted in Avola. The perimeter is a hexagon with a hexagonal square in the center with five annular arteries around the central square, where to Cathedral and the Municipal Palace are locatd, and other six streets radiate perpendicular to the five, leading into as many rectangular squares with closed corners and access at the center of the sides. These squares in turn generate as many peripheral rectangular neighborhoods, with an orthogonal stret network all around the central hexagonal area.
