The town was mentioned in a document of the 11th century, and acquired importance in the 14th century when a garrison of soldiers from Provence, who had taken part to the expedition of Charles of Anjou in Italy, decided to settle permanently in a nearby Benedictine abbey, and in the following centuries more French families immigrated to the village. This presence introduced the provencal language, which is at the basis of the local dialect.

In 1440 it was a fiefdom of Valmaggiore, then belonged to the Piccolomini, Carafa, Caracciolo and Di Capua families. In 1863 the Piedmontese army found a strong resistence in the area from groups still loyal to the Bourbon monarchy.
