History

The origin of the name is from "Monte Bello", documented since the twelfth century AD. It was formerly listed as Monte della Frasca, as can be seen in a diploma of Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa, which gave possession of the place to the Marquis of Monferrato (1164). From the thirteenth century it came under the dominion of the Republic of Chieri, and a century later, when Chieri submitted to the Savoy family, Mombello followed its fortunes. Between the late seventeenth century and the end of the eighteenth century it was under many feudal lords.

What to see

In the center stands the Parish Church dedicated to St. John the Baptist, flanked by a bell tower with clock.
The historical center with typical houses which have retained their original appearance, embellished by pergola vines.
About two and a half kilometers from the town is the Romanesque church of San Lorenzo, on top of a hill in the hamlet of Moncucco Barbaso. The church, already mentioned in a document dated 1331, now has a whitewashed facade while the apse is still intact, made of square stone blocks alternating with rows of brick, and divided into five sections by four half-columns, and ending with a brick wall; the altar is surmounted by a large eighteenth-century oil canvas depicting the martyrdom of St. Lawrence.
