Montorio nei Frentani, Province of Campobasso, Molise

In the 19th and 20th centuries this center was among the places in Molise that suffered most emigration. After 1866 some hundreds "montoriesi" went to Argentina, then after the First World War the main destination was the USA, while in the 1950s over 2,000 inhabitants left for Canada, and other hundreds for Northern Italy and Europe.

History

Founded in Lombard times, first it belonged to the county of Larino the in the Norman period (11th century) passed to the County of Loritello. Among the first feudal lords recorded in history were Vito Avalerio and Enrico Cena. The fiefdom passed then to the De Molisio in the 13th century, the Di Capua De Raho (16th century), Castelletti and finally Ceva Grimaldi.

  • The church of Assunta inside a painting representing the Assunption by Antonio Solario that dates back to the 16th century.
