Colletorto, Province of Campobasso, Molise

Rising on the slopes of Monte Crocella, the town enjoys a beautiful view on the Tortore Valley.

The original settlement called Campo dei Fiorirose around the church and the castle on top of the hill, while down in the valley, at the bottom of Colle Crocella, another settlement rose later around the Monastery. The two separate settlements, called Terra and Colle, were connected in the late 19th century through the present Corso Vittorio Emanuele.

History

Records of the Angevin times mention Colletorto in 1273, as belonging to Guglielmo D'Anglona. Oral tradition however says that Colletorto was founded after an earthquake that utterly destroyed previous medieval settlements, among them Laureto, where today is the Chapel of Santa Maria di Loreto.
