Montedinove, Province of Ascoli Piceno, Marche

The town rises 30 km away from Ascoli Piceno, in an elevated position between the valleys of the Aso and Tesino rivers, at the foot of Mount Ascensione, and is part of the Sibillini Park.
The peculiar name (translating into English as "mountain of 9") according to Toponomastica Marchigiana of historian Don Giulio Amadio might derive from either "mountain of the 9 hills" which symbol is actually represented in the coatofarms, or "mountain of news" which would be transmitted by signals form the hilltop, or is directly descended from Novana, an ancient disappeared town.

History

The territory shows traces of settlements of the Piceni in pre-Roman times. In the year 578 AD the inhabitants of Ascoli, seeking refuge from the Languebards invasion, moved to the place. The name of Montedinove is mentioned first in 1039 AD, in a donation to the Farfa Abbey, which proceeded in the following years to fortify the borough.

In 1239 the village withstood a 2-year long siege by King Enzo, and in 1279 became a free Commune. In 1586 it was included in the papal jurisdiction of Montalto, and from then on was part of the Church State until the annexation to Italy in 1860.
