Ascrea, Province of Rieti, Lazio

The small center rises on the slopes of the Filone mountain, in a position from where a splendid view of the lake of the Turano can be enjoyed.

Its origins, when compared with many other centers of the area, are rather recent, since the settlement took form between the 11th and 14th century, as a consequence of the depopulation of the villages of Bulgaretta and Mirandella, located to the north and south of the Turano Lake, respectively.

  • Population: about 300 inhabitants
  • Zip/postal code: 02020
  • Dialing Area Code: +39 0765

What to see

  • The church of San Nicola, founded in the 15th century, was rebuilt in the 16th century: inside, interesting paintings representing the Lady of the Rosary and Saint Nicholas.
  • The church of San Giovanni Battista, also dating back to the 15th century, but entirely reconstructed between 1832 and 1836, located in nearby village of Stipes, a small, picturesque jewel in the heart of the green Turano valley.
