Located at the foot of Monte Maggiore, the highest peak of the Trebulani Mountains, the center owes its name is probably to the presence in the area of a temple dedicated to the god Janus; the adjective "Vetusto" (=ancient), was added after the unification of Italy to distinguish it from the municipality of Giano dell'Umbria.
