In the 16th century it was the capital of the Consalvo fiefdom and rose in power and importance thanks also to a flourishing economy based on wheat production, linen, hemp and silk.

On 5 february 1783 a catastrophic earthquake hit the town: the earth opened engulfing everything and creating also two lakes; most of the town vanished, taking the lives of 1436 inhabitants. The survivors rebuilt their homes down in the valley, and Terranova was given the status of independent municipality in 1811; then in 1864 the name was changed into Terranova Sappo Minulio, in memory of the ancient Italic populations that settled in the area before the Greeks.
