Situated over a crest dividing two valleys 50 km from Reggio Calabria, along the southern Thyrrhenian coast, among green hills covered of century-old olive trees, a populous center in the early 1900's was greatly depopulated after a massive emigration to Australia and France following WW2.

In the 15th century was a fiefdom of the Ruffo family, and at that time is dated the statue of the Virgin Mary (Madonna degli Afflitti), sculpted by Giovambattista Mazzolo, born in Carrara, who lived in Messina for a large part of his life.
