The settlement was founded in 1685 with the toponym Casino (Castrum Casini), and became a municipality in 1811. In 1950 it took the name of Castelsilano. The name is linked to a legend: Scipione Rota, prince of Cerenzia, to put an end to an old quarrel between two neighboring feudal lords, Nicola Cortese, duke of Verzino, and Franco Cavalcanti, duke of Caccuri, invited them to a hunting competition, after which the two lords made peace. The three wanted to meet again and prince Rota decided to build a casino (=hunting lodge).
