Sellia, Province of Catanzaro, Calabria

Sellia is a mountain center located 18 km north of Catanzaro. The place was in the news in 2015 when its mayor passed a decree that forbade citizens to die and ordered them to take care of their health to prevent aging, to counter the depopulation of the place.

  • Altitude: 560 m a.s.l
  • Population: about 500 inhabitants in 2012
  • Zip/postal code: 88050
  • Dialing Area Code: +39 0961
  • Demonym: selliesi
  • Patron Saint: St. Nicola, celebrated on 6 December.

Sellia has very ancient origins, confirmed in an article published in "Le Scienze-American Scientific" by Professor Enrica Fiandra, an archeologist passionate about Crete, who noted that Sellia appeared on a map of ancient settlements of the Cretan civilization.

Present-day Sellia was founded between the 9th and 10th centuries AD by refugees from the ancient coastal town of Trischene, who, to escape Saracens' raids, took refuge on the Sellion mountain. In the new location, whose position ensured greater protection against enemy attacks, they gave birth to a new center named Asilia, from which the name Sellia was derived.
