Located in the valley of the Agri river, was called Saponara until 1863, and Saponara di Grumento from 1863 to 1932. It was seriously damaged by the earthquake of November 1980.

Ancient Grumentum was an Italic settlement, and was the scene of battles in the second Punic War and rebelled against Rome in the social war which was fought from 91 - 88 BC between the Roman Republic and a number of allied ("socii" in Latin) populations of southern Italy.
What to see
- Roman ruins from from the late Republican period, among them houses, a theatre, a fountain decorated with mosaics, baths, amphitheatre, aqueduct and mausoleums.
