Di fronte alla distesa di bare bianche dei bambini della scuola monsignor Valentinetti ha tenuto un'omelia asciutta, culminata con un fermo appello alle autorità politiche intervenute ai funerali dei bambini di San Giuliano di Puglia e delle altre vittime del terremoto. [Versione italiana:] Un quarto d'ora dopo la terribile scossa sismica, giovedì mattina, lei era già sull'ambulanza che la portava da Termoli a San Giuliano di Puglia. Elda Della Fazia, in Umbria per il terremoto e a Sarno per l'inondazione, ma anche in Kosovo. Specializzata in medicina d'urgenza e pronto soccorso, volontaria per la "Misericordia". Cuore abruzzese, il suo, di chi sa offrire assistenza ma anche solidarietà. Nata a Fossacesia da 21 anni lavora a Termoli in ospedale. "Per me è stata una pena maggiore di quella vissuta in Kosovo, è stato orribile vedere tanti bambini morti sotto travi e calcinacci: ne ricordo quattro vicini l'uno all'altro, che dolore estrarre quei corpicini. Alle nostre spalle la tragedia delle famiglie straziate ... Le voci dei bambini. Li sentivamo piangere, lamentarsi, chiedere aiuto e acqua. E' stato terribile quando un bimbo sotto le macerie ha detto che la manina del compagnetto era diventata fredda".

Fuori, la gente ha cominciato ad arrivare all'alba. Dalle tendopoli, dai paesi vicini, da altri lontani, attraverso i campi appena arati, col vestito buono per rispetto, coi fiori in mano per pietà. Nel capannone, le 29 bare erano sepolte da genitori, parenti, amici. Con una foto sopra, coi fiori accanto, coi giocattoli preferiti, con le letterine d'addio dei fratellini rimasti vivi. Bare piccole, bianche. Sono cominciati poco dopo le 10 i funerali dei piccoli angeli di San Giuliano. Le autorità sono arrivate in silenzio. Lo strazio è immenso. Il vescovo parla di dolore e di rassegnazione, della morte, della resurrezione. "Questi bambini, che sono stati strappati al nostro amore, ora sono nella gloria del suo amore. Questi angeli contemplano Dio". Poi si rivolge alla prima fila: "A coloro che rappresentano lo Stato, la vita pubblica, dico: aiutateci a vigilare, a prevenire, perchè mai più questa tragedia si debba ripetere". Poi, all'altare, sale Nunziatina, mamma di Luigi, uno dei piccoli chiusi in quelle bare. "I nostri angeli li affidiamo al Signore, ma queste cose non devono più accadere perché nessuna mamma e nessun papà devono soffrire così". Ciampi si ferma accanto a Luca e Mario, si rivolge al padre e alla nonna: "Dovete farvi forza per loro. I morti non ci sono più, loro sono qui".
