Montereale, Province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo

Montereale is located in the northernmost part of the province of L'Aquila, on a hill in a dominant position over the surrounding upper valley of the Aterno, the main Abruzzo river whose sources are located within the municipal area, near the hamlet of Aringo. It is made up of numerous hamlets, called "Villas", scattered throughout the territory, surrounded by the Upper Aterno Mountains, the Monti della Laga and, partially, by the Gran Sasso d'Italia massif.

History

Fondata nel periodo alto - medievale, ci giungono le prime notizie storiche intorno al XII secolo, quando si chiamava Monte Reagalis; appartenuto ai Farnese, venne quasi interamente distrutta dal terremoto del 1903, per poi essere faticosamente ricostruita.
