Images of the Perdonanza, L'Aquila, August 2009
It was the first Perdonanza after the terrible earthquake that hit L'Aquila and the church itself, Santa Maria di Collemaggio. But it was also the 800th anniversary of the birth of Pope Celestine V, who inspired this Pardon.
2009 was a special Jubilee, more sober and more attentive to the religious side of the event. The urn containing the remains of St. Peter Celestine, retrieved from the Fire Department the day after the earthquake under the rubble from the fall of the vault, was in front of the basilica. On this day, the urn of the Pope was carried on a special fire brigade truck. [The photos were taken from the corner of the avenue leading to the Basilica.]
