Language corner: "avoglia, hai voglia, avoja" is an expression used in many regions, especially in central and southern Italy. As to its etymology, it make come from an ironical exclamation as "you would like to..." or from "to your liking", but its historical development is unsure. It can be used with two basic meanings:
- as a synonym of "of course, sure, very much so"
- or to show the uselessness of an action: "avoglia a studiare matematica, non l'imparerai mai" (you may study Maths as much as you can, you'll never learn it"
