Il Sorpasso, directed by Dino Risi

Il Sorpasso Dino Risi directed "Il Sorpasso" in 1962, starring Vittorio Gassman, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Catherine Spaak, Claudio Gora, Luciana Angiolillo. The movie, a cult of Italian cinema, can be considered the ancestor of the "road movies" in the line of Easy Rider.

The story develops at Ferragosto, along a road in northern Tuscany. Roberto, a shy college student and Bruno, an immature forty-year-old, meet casually and join in a series of tragicomic episodes spending the day together driving in Bruno's car, until the unexpected epilogue and tragical death of the student caused by Bruno's careless actions.

[Roberto] Su vola, alè!
[Bruno] Torniamo a Viareggio?
[Roberto] Non lo so. Non facciamo programmi. Vedremo!
[Bruno] Bravo, come piace a me, senza programmi.
[Roberto] Come on, fly, go!
[Bruno] Shall we go back to Viareggio?
[Roberto] I don't know. Let's not make plans. We'll see!
[Bruno] Good, as I like it, without plans.

Alé,
[Roberto] Dai, corri, dai!
Urrà! Urrà!
[Bruno] Bravo avvocato, adesso vai bene, lo vedi
[Bruno] O, ma che ce manca a noi? Superare!
Alé,
[Roberto] go, faster, go!
Hurray! Hurray!
[Bruno] good, lawyer, you are good now, you see
[Bruno] Hey, but what else do we need? Pass him!

[Roberto] Bruno, ho passato con te i giorni più belli della mia vita, davvero!
[Roberto] Supera! attento al muro...
[Roberto] Bruno, I spent with you the most beautiful days in my life, it's true!
[Roberto] Overcome! beware the wall...

[Bruno] Stai calmo, stai calmo...
[Roberto] Urrà!
[Bruno] Quello campa poco!
[Bruno] Stay quiet, Stay quiet...
[Roberto] Hurray!
[Bruno] That one won't live long!
after the accident
[policeman] Era un suo parente?
[Bruno] Eh? Si chiamava Roberto... Il cognome non lo so. L'ho conosciuto ieri mattina.
[policeman] Was he a relative?
[Bruno] What? His name was Roberto... I don't know his surname. I met him yesterday morning.
