Cappella degli Scrovegni
Sections on Learning Italian
Giotto's frescoes, spread over the entire surface for 900 square meters, with one third of the whole surface in lapis lazuli blue, are organized into four sections, with the panels containing the stories of the characters separated by geometric frames.
The painting cycle, focused on the theme of salvation, includes scenes on the life of Christ, Joachim, Mary, Pentecost. The narration follows a rigorous decorative program, organized on three registers. On the counter is then a giant Last Judgement - which, according to the medieval tradition, is what the visitor sees when leaving the Chapel.
tener lo campo, e ora ha Giotto il grido,
sì che la fama di colui è scura."
[Dante, Purgatorio XI, 94-96]
to hold the field, and now Giotto has the cry,
so that the fame of that one is dim."
[Dante's Purgatorio XI, 94-96]
