Ötzi, the Similaun Mummy (Iceman)
In 1991 a couple from Nurnberg, while hiking near the Similaun glacier, saw a body emerging from the ice. A rescue team was called, and soon it was discovered that the unfortunate traveler was thousands of years old. A recent genetic map noted the presence of traits common to those of Sardinians and Corsicans; the mapping revealed Ötzi belonged to 0 blood group, had a predisposition to cardiovascular disease, lactose intolerance, and Lyme disease.
Currently, Ötzi is preserved in a special structure with optimum storage conditions while allowing observation. Together with the body were also found clothing and personal items of great archaeological interest, such as a yew bow, a quiver with two arrows ready and others in progress, a flint knife, a copper ax, a marble pearl, a tinder-box, and a backpack to hold the items.
Recent exams have shown the presence of a flint arrowhead in the left shoulder and other wounds and bruises that lead to hypothesize a violent death rather than natural causes, as had been suggested at first. The unnatural posture of the body seemed an attempt to extract an arrow from the belly; additional elements suggest that a group of men escaped an ambush, probably a companion transported his body to the place of death.
Ötzi has another record: he is the first tattooed person of whom we have knowledge: on his body as many as 57 tattoos were identified, which made him a cult for tattoo artists around the world.
