Bikini e tamurè - Tony Renis

Bikini e tamurè In the summer of 1963 Tony Renis made a record promoting a new dance coming from Polynesian isles, tamoure. At the time, promos were aired in cinemas before the main features. The short clip belongs to the historical archive of Istituto Luce.

Tony Renis, pseudonym of Elio Cesari (Milan, 13 May 1938), is an Italian singer, composer, actor and record producer. In 1962 he took part to the Sanremo Festival with Quando quando quando, a song born from the collaboration with Alberto Testa, author of the lyrics: the song did not win, but obtained a huge commercial and artistic success.

Language Corner

  • musica leggera = generally all pop music, as opposed to musica classica.
  • Seaside lexicon: bagnino= lifeguard, bagnante= bather
  • Sapere + verb corresponds to modal "can" in the idea of acquired ability, skill - therefore not for requests, permissions, possibility, in which cases the Italian verb "potere" is used. Example: so nuotare (=I can swim).
  • In Italian subject pronouns are mostly not expressed, since the verb endings are different for each person; therefore, for the irregular verb sapere we have: so, sai, sa, sappiamo, sapete, sanno.
  • tuffarsi= to dive, is reflexive, therefore: mi tuffo, ti tuffi, si tuffa, ci tuffiamo, vi tuffate, si tuffano.
