Piemonte regional songs
Piedmont had for several centuries a considerable development of art music, and folk traditions were also influenced by nearby Savoy and France. Like the majority of folk songs, repetition is typical, since it helps memory and often marked the rhythm of collective work.
The oldest songs extant are in a kind of French, until Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy, during the second half of the 16th century, ordered Italian to be used as official language, though local languages survived in songs even until the early 20th century.
