- In Basilicata the most common surnames are toponymic, that is, related to place of origin: Albano, Calabrese, Cirigliano, Cosentino, Genovese, Grieco, Lauria, Lombardi, Montemurro, Stigliano.
- As with other regions of Southern Italy, we find surnames formed with definite articles (La, Lo, Le) such as Larocca, Laguardia, Lasala, Latorre, Labella, Lamacchia, Lasalandra, Lobascio, Lenoci, Locantore, Lo Piccolo, Logiurato, Loperfido, Lorusso, Lovaglio.
- Other common, typical surnames are formed using prefixes as "mastro" (Mastronardi, Mastrangelo, Mastrosimone), "papa" (Papaleo, Papapietro) and "tata" (Tatananni).
