Surname Agnese, Agnesi and variations

Etymology

Medieval matronymic surname, that is the transformation of a first name into a surname of a name of a female ascendant Agnese. It was derived from the Latin Agnes, derived from the Greek "Haghnè", in its turn adapted from the adjective "pure and chaste [woman]". The variation "Agnesini" may most probably be derived from a congregation of faithfuls that venerated St. Agnes.
