Italian State Archives

In Italy there are State Archives in the province capitals, as well as in other major centers. In their separate websites each archive office offers information on resources available, opening times, contact and rules for research. Each archive preserves original documents which contain valuable resources for genealogy research, including civil records of municipalities in the province, as well as notary archives, court proceedings, military records and more.
The Amministrazione Archivistica Italiana offers an Ancestors Portal, where the main resources preserved are described. Most archives have published civil records online with images of records, for periods that however depend on the history of the area and the archive. A convenient "Search" feature in the online materials allows to find a specific Place register of Stato Civile (Nati, Morti, Matrimoni, etc.), or it is possible to search by single State Archive, or by type of fund - whether Napoleonic (1809-1815), Restoration (1816-1865) or Italian (after 1866).
