Per Elisa, Alice

Sung by Alice, the piece was the winner of the 31st Festival of Sanremo, with music composed by Franco Battiato and Giusto Pio, while the lyrics were by Battiato and the singer Alice.
The text was a counterpart to Beethoven's famous "Für Elise". Elisa is a symbolic character, a woman that has taken the singer's companion, and can get him do anything, "and she's not even beautiful!". The aggressive lyrics fit perfectly with the deep voice and the image of confident woman of singer Alice, whose victory at the Sanremo Festival in 1981 was a real triumph.

There is another interpretation of the song, never confirmed by the authors. Elisa would be heroin and drug addiction would be taking the man away. In any case, this is a great piece written by one of the greatest Italian song-writers of our time and sung by a very special performer.

Per Elisa
vuoi vedere che perderai anche me.
For Elisa
you see, you will lose me too.

Per Elisa
non sai più distinguere che giorno è
e poi, non è nemmeno bella.
For Elisa
you do not know any more what day it is
and after all, she is not even beautiful.

Per Elisa
paghi sempre tu e non ti lamenti
per lei ti metti in coda per le spese
e il guaio è che non te ne accorgi.
For Elisa
you always pay and do not complain
for her will you queue in the shops
and the trouble is, you do not notice.

Con Elisa
guardi le vetrine e non ti stanchi
lei ti lascia e ti riprende
come e quando vuole lei
riesce solo a farti male.
With Elisa
you look at shop windows and don't get tired
she leaves you and takes you again
how and whenever she wants
she can only hurt you.

Vivere vivere vivere
non è più vivere,
lei ti ha plagiato,
ti ha preso anche la dignità.
Fingere fingere fingere
non sai più fingere
senza di lei, senza di lei
ti manca l'aria.
To live live live
this is no longer living,
she has plagiarized you,
she took also your dignity.
To pretend pretend pretend
you cannot pretend any more
without her, without her
you cannot breathe.

Senza Elisa,
non esci neanche a prendere il giornale
con me riesci solo a dire due parole
ma noi, un tempo ci amavamo.
Without Elisa,
you do not even go out and get a newspaper
with me you can only say two words
but we, once we loved each other

Con Elisa
guardi le vetrine e non ti stanchi,
lei ti lascia e ti riprende
come e quando vuole lei
riesce solo a farti male.
With Elisa
you look at shop windows and don't get tired
she leaves you and takes you again
how and whenever she wants
she can only hurt you.

Vivere Vivere Vivere
non è più vivere
lei ti ha plagiato,
ti ha preso anche la dignità,
fingere fingere fingere
non sai più fingere
senza di lei, senza di lei
ti manca l'aria.
To live live live
this is no longer living,
she has plagiarized you,
she took also your dignity.
To pretend pretend pretend
you cannot pretend any more
without her, without her
you cannot breathe.

Vivere non è più vivere
per Elisa, con Elisa!
To live is no longer living,
for Elisa, with Elisa!
