Ninì Tirabusciò

This greatly successful song was written by Salvatore Gambardella and Aniello Califano and performed by Gennaro Pasquariello for the first time at the Politeama theatre in 1911.
Other performers included Angela Luce, and director Marcello Fondato drew inspiration from the song for his movie "Nini Tirabusciò" of 1970, starring Monica Vitti, where the famous "mossa" (=move, a round movement with the hips) was introduced.

Chillu turzo 'e mio marito
nun se pò cchiù suppurtà.
Ll'aggio 'a cósere 'o vestito.
Mm'aggio 'a mettere a cantà.
That stupid husband of mine
I can no longer bear.
I must play him a good joke.
I will start to sing.

Tutto è pronto. Stó aspettanno
na scrittura p' 'a firmà.
Nun appena che mm' 'a danno,
vado fore a debuttà.
Everything is ready. I'm waiting
for a contract to sign.
As soon as they give it to me
I will go out to debut.

Ho scelto un nome eccentrico:
"Ninì Tirabusciò".
Oh, oh, oh. Oh, oh, oh.
Addio mia bella Napoli,
mai più ti rivedrò.
Oh, oh, oh. Perderai Tirabusciò.
I chose an eccentric name:
"Nini Tirabusciò".
Oh, oh, oh. Oh, oh, oh.
Farewell my beautiful Naples,
I will never see you again.
Oh, oh, oh. You will lose Tirabusciò.

Ne cunosco tante e tante
ca nun só cchiù meglio 'e me
e cu 'e llire e cu 'e brillante
só turnate da 'e tturné.
I know so many girls
that are no better than me
and with money and with diamonds
They are back from tours.

'A furtuna, s'è capito,
'ncopp' 'e ttavule se fa.
Ca fatiche e ghiétt' 'acito,
che risorse puó sperà?
Fortune - we know that,
on game tables is made.
who toils and throws vinegar,
in which resources can she hope?

Aìz' 'a vesta, smuóvete.
Ch'è ll'epoca ch' 'o vvò'.
Oh, oh, oh. Oh, oh, oh.
Addio mia bella Napoli,
mai più ti rivedrò.
Oh, oh, oh, perderai Tirabusciò.
Raise your dress, come on.
It's the time that asks for it.
Oh, oh, oh. Oh, oh, oh.
Farewell my beautiful Naples,
I will never see you again.
Oh, oh, oh. You will lose Tirabusciò.

Pe' cantà nun serve 'a voce,
è 'o partito ca nce vò.
Po' 'e ccanzone miette 'ncroce
ca faje "bisse" quante vuó'.
You do not need a voice to sing,
a recommendation is what it takes.
Then you ruin the songs
and give as many replays as you like.

Dai il tuo cuore 'ncopp' 'a piazza
ai più ricchi habitué.
Vide po' si 'un fanno 'a mazza
ll'ate artiste 'nnanze a te.
Give your heart on the square
to the richest regulars.
Then see if they are not in bad shape
the other artists compared to you.

E' chesta 'a vera tattica
de na sciantosa 'e mo'.
Oh, oh, oh. Oh, oh, oh.
Addio mia bella Napoli,
mai più ti rivedró.
Oh, oh, oh. Perderai Tirabusciò.
And this is the true tactics
of a chanteuse of today.
Oh, oh, oh. Oh, oh, oh.
Farewell my beautiful Naples,
I will never see you again.
Oh, oh, oh. You will lose Tirabusciò.
