'U Pecuraru

The song expresses the strange character of the shepherd almost unaccostumed to normal life. A solitary and roguish man, unable to communicate with civilized society.
The expression in the last line "malandrinu", meaning rogue, scoundrel, is typical of the widespread contempt for a man who lives in the company of sheep and dogs.

Lu pecuraru sta sia juorni fora:
u sabato barune si nne vena;
u sabatu si chiama allegra core
ppe chine tena bella la mugliera.
Chine l'ha brutta le scura lu core
è miegliu ca lu sabatu nun vena!
The shepherd stays six days away:
on Saturday he comes back to the village;
Saturday the heart is happy
for whom has a beautiful wife.
who has an ugly one, his heart is dark
better not to come back on Saturday!

Lu pecuraru chi sa 'sti cose
vena lu sabatu e si riposa;
pecuraru de Carenzia
si nne vena la via via;
si nne vena faciennu cruce
viene a la casa e stutala luce.
The shepherd that knows these things
comes back on Saturday and rests;
shepherd from Carenzia
comes back along the way;
comes back with a sign of cross
comes back home and turns off the light.

Lu pecuraru chi sa 'sta cosa
vena lu sabatu e si riposa;
pecuraru de Carenzia
ti nne veni la via via;
te nne ven' faciennu cruce
vieni a la casa e stutala luce.
Ohi pecuraro-ohi pecuraru!
The shepherd that knows these things
comes back on Saturday and rests;
shepherd from Carenzia
comes back along the way;
comes back with a sign of cross
comes back home and turns off the light.
O shepherd! O shepherd!

Lu pecuraru quannu si nni vena
mancu allu liettu sua si sa curcare:
quandu minta la capa a lu cuscinu
se crida ch'è la trascina e lu pane;
quandu fa' na carezza alla mugliera
se crida ch'è la piecura lattara.
The shepherd when he comes back
not even in bed he is able to lay down:
when he places his head on the pillow
he thinks it is cheese and bread;
when he caresses his wife
he thinks she is a sheep.

Lu pecuraru nun sa 'sti cose
viene a la casa e nun si ripose.
Pecuraru mangiaricotte
va alla Chiesa e nun si 'nginocchia,
nun se caccia lu birrettinu,
pecurareddu malandrino.
Ohi pecuraru-ohi pecuraru!
The shepherd that does not know these thisngs
comes back home and does not rest;
shepher, ricotta eater
goes to church and does not kneel
does not take off his cap
shepherd rogue.
O shepherd! O shepherd!
