Pippo non lo sa

1940, Lyrics by Mario Panzeri and Rastelli, music by Gorni Kramer.
The song was censured by the fascist authorities because the main character, who walks along the streets makes everyone laugh, had been identified by the fascist censors with a well-known party official. It became a hit also abroad: it was recorded in German as "Lieber Sonnenschein" by saxophonist and conductor Tullio Mobiglia, which at that time was living in Berlin.

E ma Pippo Pippo non lo sa
che quando passa ride tutta la città
e le sartine dalle vetrine
gli fan mille mossettine
And but Pippo Pippo does not know
that when he goes by all town laughs
and seamstresses from the windows
make him a thousand gestures

ma lui con grande serietà
saluta tutti fa un inchino e se ne va
si crede bello come un Apollo
e saltella come un pollo
but he very seriously
greets everyone, bows and leaves
believes he's as beautiful as Apollo
and hops around like a chicken

Sopra il cappotto
porta la giacca
e sopra il gilet la camicia
sopra le scarpe porta le calze
non ha un botton
e con le stringhe tien su i calzon
Over the coat
he wears his suit jacket
and over the vest a shirt
over his shoes he wears the socks
he does not have a button
and holds up his pants with laces

E Pippo Pippo non lo sa
e serio serio se ne va per la città
si crede bello come un Apollo
e saltella come un pollo
And Pippo Pippo does not know
and very seriously he goes through the city
he believes he's as beautiful as Apollo
and hops around like a chicken
