Piemontesina Bella

A love song that became popular in 1936, though not in Piedmontese dialect, it has however become also a symbol of the folk tradition of Piedmont. Lyrics were by Enrico Frati, music by Giovanni Raimondo.

Piemontesina Bella
The song tells about a young student in Turin who must leave after finishing his studies. In addition to leaving the city of Turin, he also must leave his "beautiful Piemontesina" (Rosina), with whom he fell in love and spent many evenings at the "Valentino", the city park of Turin, one of the Historic landmarks of the city.

The music is a rather melanchonic waltz, and is often danced and sung in folk festivals, but is also a symbol of so many Piedmontese who emigrated and missed their homeland.

Addio bei giorni passati,
mia piccola amica ti devo lasciar,
gli studi son già terminati
abbiamo finito così di sognar.
Farewell good old days,
my little friend, I must leave you
the studies are already over
so we ended dreaming.

Lontano andrò,
dove non so,
parto col pianto nel cuor,
dammi l'ultimo bacio d'amor.
I will go far away,
where I do not know,
O leave with tears in my heart,
give me a last kiss of love.

Non ti potrò scordare
piemontesina bella,
sarai la sola stella
che brillerà per me.
I won't be able to forget you
beautiful Piemontesina,
you'll be the only star
that will shine for me.

Ricordi quelle sere
passate al Valentino,
col biondo studentino
che ti stringeva sul cuor.
Remember those nights
passed at the Valentine,
with your blond young student
that was holding you to his heart.

Addio allegro studente,
di un tempo lontano e adesso dottor,
io curo la povera gente
ma quel che non riesco a guarire è il mio cuor.
Farewell cheerful student,
of long ago and now a doctor,
I take care of the poor people
but what I cannot heal is my heart.
If sung by a male voice
[Rosina il tuo allegro studente,
di un giorno lontano è adesso dottor,
io curo la povera gente
ma pure non riesco a guarire il mio cuor.]
[ Rosina your cheerful student,
a day away is now a doctor,
I take care of the poor people
well but I can not heal my heart.]

La gioventù,
non torna più,
quanti ricordi d'amor,
a Torino ho lasciato il mio cuor.
Youth,
does not come back,
how many memories of love,
in Turin I left my heart.

Non ti potrò scordare
piemontesina bella,
sarai la sola stella
che brillerà per me.
I won't be able to forget you
beautiful Piemontesina,
you'll be the only star
that will shine for me.
