Maramao perché sei morto?

Composed in 1939 by Mario Panzeri and Mario Consiglio, this foxtrot was sung at the time by Maria Jottini with the Trio Lescano.
Panzeri was inspired by an old ballad recorded by Vitaliano Brancati already in his book Ritorno alla censura: "On the night of February 10, 1831 a crippled man was walking through the streets of Rome singing 'Maramao, perché sei morto? Pane e vin non ti mancava, l'insalata avevi all'orto...' He was arrested under the charge of alluding to the recent funeral of the Pope. In 1939 also Panzeri was accused by the Fascist censorhip of a reference to the death of Costanzo Ciano (father of Gian Galeazzo, the Duce's son-in-law).

Quando tutto tace
e su nel ciel la luna appar,
col mio più dolce e caro miao,
chiamo Maramao.
When all is silent
and in the sky the moon appears,
with my sweetest and dearest meow,
I call Maramao.

Vedo tutti i mici
sopra i tetti a passeggiar,
ma pure loro senza te
sono tristi come me.
I see all the cats
above the roofs strolling,
but even they without you
are sad like me.

Maramao perché sei morto?
Pane e vin non ti mancava,
l'insalata era nell'orto,
e una casa avevi tu.
Maramao why did you die?
Bread and wine were not missing,
the salad was in the garden,
and a house you had.

Le micine innamorate
fanno ancor per te le fusa,
ma la porta è sempre chiusa
e tu non rispondi più.
The she-cats in love
are still purring for you,
but the door is always closed
and you do not answer anymore.

Maramao, Maramao
fanno i mici in coro:
Maramao, Maramao
mao, mao, mao, mao, mao...
Maramao, Maramao
make the cats in a chorus:
Maramao, Maramao
meow, meow, meow, meow, meow...

Maramao perché sei morto?
Pane e vin non ti mancava,
l'insalata era nell'orto,
e una casa avevi tu.
Maramao why did you die?
Bread and wine were not missing,
the salad was in the garden,
and a house you had.

Anche la nonnina
triste e sola al focolar,
seguita sempre a brontolar
e non vuol filar.
Even Granny
sad and alone at the fireplace,
goes on always grumbling
and does not want to spin.

L'ultimo gomitolo
con cui giocavi tu
sul suo grembiule bianco e blu
non si muove proprio più.
The last ball of wool
you used to play with
on her white and blue apron
is not moving anymore.
