There was a cricket in a field of flax,
the ant asked him a tad bit of it.

Said the cricket, "What do you wanna do?"
"socks and shirts, I want to get married."

Rispose il grillo: "Lo sposo sarò io!"
La formicuzza: "Sono contenta anch'io!"
Said the cricket, "The groom will be me!"
The ant: "I'm happy too!"

Fatto il pranzo del giorno delle nozze,
quattro ciliege e due castagne cotte.
The lunch was made on the day of the wedding,
four cherries and two cooked chestnuts.

Andarono in chiesa per mettersi l'anello;
They went to church to put the ring;
the cricket fell and broke his brain.

It was 7 o'clock there at the sea
and they say that the cricket is hospital.

It was 8 o'clock there at the harbor
and they say that the cricket is dead.

La formicuzza vestita di bianco
andò ad accompagnare il grilletto al camposanto.
The pretty ant dressed in white
went to accompany the dear cricket to the cemetery.

Le grillettine vestite di nero
andaron ad accompagnare il grilletto al cimitero.
The pretty female crickets dressed in black
went to accompany the cricket to the cimitero.

Caro grilletto quant'eri elegante
quando te portavi quelle calzole bianche
Dear little cricket how elegant you were
when you were wearing those white socks

Caro grilletto quant'eri vezzoso
quando te portavi quel vestito da sposo
Dear little cricket how charming you were
when you were wearing that wedding suit

The little ant for the great pain
took a pin and pierced her heart.

It was 9 o'clock there at Montenero
they say that the fact is not true.
