Canzone del Grappa

The music of the song was composed by Army Capt. Antonio Meneghetti, in exactly half an hour on August 5, 1918 at Villa Dolfin di Rosà, based on the text prepared by General Emilio De Bono, Commander of the IX Corps. The first words had been written on the broken walls of a bombed house by Italian soldiers fighting in the war front against the Austrian Hungarian Empire.
There were three major battles at the Grappa, fought by the Fourth Army first under Gen. Di Robilant and then Gen. Giardino: the first in November-December 1917, when after the defeat of Caporetto the Central Powers gained control of much of the mountain; the second in June 1918, when the Italian army was able to stop the Austrian offensive and the third and bloodiest, the final Italian offensive, in October 1918.

On the morning of August 24, 1918, on a big lawn in front of Villa Dolfin, in the presence of the king of Italy, Vittorio Emanuele III and the military authorities, the anthem was performed for the first time in its present form.

Monte Grappa tu sei la mia patria,
sovra a te il nostro sole risplende,
a te mira chi spera ed attende
i fratelli che a guardia vi stan.
Monte Grappa you are my homeland,
above you our sun is shining,
towards you are looking they who hope and wait
for the brothers who keep guard there.

Contra a te già s'infranse il nemico,
che all'Italia tendeva lo sguardo:
non si passa un cotal baluardo
affidato ad italici cuor.
Against you was crushed the enemy
that towards Italy directed his eyes:
such a barrier cannot be passed
entrusted to Italian hearts.

Monte Grappa tu sei la mia patria,
sei la stella che addita il cammino,
sei la gloria, il volere, il destino,
che all'Italia ci fa ritornar.
Monte Grappa you are my homeland,
you are the star that shines on my path,
you are the glory, the will, the destiny,
that to Italy will let us return.

Le tue cime fur sempre vietate
per il piè dell'odiato straniero
dei tuoi fianchi egli ignora il sentiero
che pugnando più volte tentò.
Your peaks were always forbidden
to the feet of the hated foreigner
of your sides he does not know the paths
that fighting he tried so many times

Qual la candida neve che al verno
ti ricopre di splendido ammanto,
tu sei puro ed invitto col vanto
che il nemico non lasci passar.
As the white snow that in winter
covers you in a splendid mantle,
you are pure and untamed with the glory
that the enemy you do not let come.

Monte Grappa tu sei la mia patria,
sei la stella che addita il cammino,
sei la gloria, il volere, il destino,
che all'Italia ci fa ritornar.
Monte Grappa you are my homeland,
you are the star that shines on my path,
you are the glory, the will, the destiny,
that to Italy will let us return.

O montagna per noi tu sei sacra
giù di lì scenderanno le schiere
che irrompenti a spiegate bandiere
l'invasore dovranno scacciar.
O mountain for us you are sacred
down from here will come the armies
that running with flying colors
the invader will push back.

Ed i giorni del nostro servaggio
che scontammo mordendo nel freno,
in un forte avvenire sereno
noi ben presto vedremo mutar.
And the days of our servitude
that we paid biting the brake,
into a strong clear future
we shall soon see changed.

Monte Grappa tu sei la mia patria,
sei la stella che addita il cammino,
sei la gloria, il volere, il destino,
che all'Italia ci fa ritornar.
Monte Grappa you are my homeland,
you are the star that shines on my path,
you are the glory, the will, the destiny,
that to Italy will let us return.
