Etymology: There are different possible, non mutually exclusive origins, which may be valid in different places. A possible etymology is from "arcaro" that is manufacturer of arks, or pieces of furniture made of wooden crates, for various uses. Another etymology derives the surname from the officer that in medieval times was encharged with guarding the public treasure that was usually kept in an ark. Still another theory traces from French archier, that is to say "archer".

Distribution: The surname is disseminated all over Italy, which also is consistent with the different etymologies proposed.
